An Item Honoring the NAACP on its 90th Anniversary

May 12, 1999

REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION NO. 99-19 OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, HONORING THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE (NAACP) ON ITS 90TH ANNIVERSARY AND WELCOMING ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO MIAMI FOR THEIR NATIONAL MEETING, MAY 13-15, 1999

For many years, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has opposed ethnic hatred all across the country, yet clearly there is a great deal more work to be done. During the association's 90-year existence, it has worked valiantly to ensure a democratic way of life and values that stress the worth and dignity of the individual.

There is no room for racism m this country and particularly not in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. This school district continues to be on the cutting edge of providing equal educational opportunities for all of its students. Our Intergroup Relations Team, among its many activities, frequently conducts workshops and inservice training that are designed to change attitudes and address the issues of racism and cultural differences. Our Office of Equal Educational Opporttmity continues to encourage equity in the classroom. Our employees represent well the diversity of our community. Therefore, we are pleased to honor the NAACP as it celebrates its 90th anniversary this year and welcome its Board of Directors to Miami for their national meeting.

The good cause to vary from the agenda in this matter is that the NAACP's national board will meet in Miami May 13-15, 1999.

This item does not appear in the published agenda.
