MIAMI - Miami-Dade County School Board Member Robert B. Ingram hosted a "Read-to-Lead" awards ceremony at Opa-Locka Elementary School to commemorate the many accomplishments of students in District 1, which he represents.

Improving reading ability must head our efforts to improve student performance," said Dr. Ingram, who launched a "Read-To-Lead" initiative in District 1.

Reading expands one's ability to write, to compute, to think, and to articulate one's thoughts," he noted.

Highlights of the evening included award presentations by Dr. Ingram and a workshop for parents on issues such as Home-To-Work, preparation for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, college readiness, health care, and the governor's voucher-A+ plans.

Featured celebrity readers included School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, Board Member Betsy Kaplan, State Sen. Kendrick Meek, State Reps. Willie Logan and Frederica Wilson, Judge William Johnson, Channel 10 News anchor Vicky Frazier-Williams, Title 1 Executive Officer Maybeline Truesdell, and Miami Dolphin Hall-Of-Famers Larry Little, Mercury Morris, Dwight Stevenson, and Charles Benson.

Stated Dr. Ingram, "May this adventure awaken each child and spark an interest in reading that enhances viable, lifelong reading habits."
