Thirty-nine of Dr. Robert B. lngram's "Read To Lead" students celebrated the success of the program by embarking on a historical tour of central Florida last week. Students from Lakeview, Opa-locka and Miami Gardens elementary schools were awarded the free, two-day trip through the "Read To Lead" Scholarship Awards Program. They explored the historical significance of St. Augustine, the country's oldest city, and traveled to Orlando for a day of fun at Universal Studios. For many students, the trip was the first outside their communities.

The students kept journals of their journey to express what they learned on the trip. Chanyce Vincent, a fourth-grader at Opa-locka Elementary School, wrote "The week has been a very good one. We went to the old Florida museum and to the Anna Kingsley plantation. We saw an exhibit at the mall, ate at Shoney's, slept in a nice hotel and spent all day at Universal Studios. That's how I spent my two days."

"May these adventures awaken each child and spark an interest in learning and a lifelong reading habit. Reading enlarges one's world and creates a vision for those who may not have one," said Dr. Robert B. Ingram, Miami-Dade School Board Member for District 1.

Established in 1999, the "Read To Lead" initiative is designed to encourage students to increase their reading by having the ill read at least 10 books in the school year.
